Public Works Lead Service Line Inspections
Over the next couple of months, the City of Ferndale is participating in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Get the Lead Out (GLO) Initiative. Beginning tomorrow, August 13, 2024, and continuing through the week, you may see the Ferndale Water Team in your neighborhood. With support from the GLO initiative, we will be meeting with residents to verify service line materials inside the home. We plan on visiting approximately 600 homes this week to do internal verifications.
The verification process is simple. The inspector will just need to look at the water line where it connects to the water meter, snap two pictures, and they’ll be on their way. The verifications should take roughly 5 minutes to perform. These internal service line verifications are important because they improve our understanding of the concentration of lead service lines in your neighborhoods. This allows us to better prioritize the Lead Service Line Replacement program.
The Department of Public Works has put out sign blocks that will be a part of the first wave of door knocking. If you’re unable to participate when we’re in the neighborhood, we will have a self-reporting tool out by the end of the month that will allow you to verify your service line material using a smartphone.
